It was all a bit complicated.

I wasn't sure that it was possible to control myself. The lines, and dots, and circles just keep coming. It was a deluge.  Now that I can see it; I'm glad. Losing control, letting the energy of the moment take control of the drawing is what I seek. The energy can be quiet and rhythmic — obsessive or unexpected and overwhelming. It's all good.

Unbridled silliness.

Last week I finally got back into the studio. I wasn't feeling like I would be productive but, something happened and I began experimenting with a new drawing that in a relative of the sounding series. I'm not sure this is the language for the whole series but I have found some new interactions that need more investigation.  I only made one drawing. It took me more than 8 hours. Will I make more or make something different? Not sure yet.

The first draw of white matte undercoat.

I used a plastic putty knife to drag a thin layer a skin of sorts in a long stripe. The sheet is Yupo. That means anything applied to the surface must air dry. That can take a considerable amount of time. I was pleased with the variation of the white paint. The translucency is  perfect for the metaphor of sounding.

Trying to get into some new color field spaces. Felt extremely energetic when I made this one.  I'm finding these to be fun. Stepping outside of a number of comfortable place to explore some new and shapes and marks.

Still using a solid background. This time my color applications are experiencing the opportunity of transparency. I like it. I'm working on some ways to make perfect circles with tools that I make in the studio. Then I will try them on paper in larger drawings.

Like fireworks for me. In the darkness little streams of light that dance on a blackened sky. That's what this drawing look like to me now. But when I began I was searching to break out of some of the comfortable language I have been exploring and create some new words. Vowel sounds long and short came to mind. This is what I heard.

Traveling down the same road. Looking at variations of the smae brushes and a full color background.
Just a couple simple marks a crescent shape to cradle them. It's planetary in a way. Seeing so many things in these forms and enjoying the floating of them.

The last page of the Moleskine

The last page of my last Moleskine. It's always a surprise when one is finished and I put it on a shelf with the others. A growing family containing my thoughts in words and drawings. So many pages with scribbles made during sips of coffee in the rain, sun, boiling heat and freezing cold.

New series of experiments using a solid colorfield. A new conversation, new marks and shapes. I like this coffee cup shape and the steam that rises above. I like this drawing more than I thought.
