Super hot temps drive me to small books

In the studio or on the road I try to make little drawings. I love making small single-sheet books and carry one or two with me at all times. I'm almost finished with this book of rhythms. Using metallic ink and some opaque colors it is starting to take shape.

These resemble embroidery or weaving with luminus thread. The result is a pleasant surprise worth exploring more.

I hope to have several of these at Open Studios in October.

In the studio : Tilting the table

I'm working on a commission that is based on my soundings drawings. The new form factor of mounted paper on cradle boards required a different set up. For many drawings I may draw on the wall. For ink drawings I usually draw on a flat surface. I have to reach across a distance and an incline can usually help. Using dip pens or droppers means the positioning of the pen holds the ink in place.

In the studio : hanging hardware for being in the woods

Magnets and vinyl washers with monofilament. That's the way I expect to hang my drawings in being in the woods. This afternoon over lunch I sketched the possibilities for hanging drawings in my upcoming show.

There are many issues to consider. Keeping the drawing taut, keeping the method for hanging as invisable as possible and maintaining an immovable space. Time to make some prototypes to test results. I happen to have all the components to build a test installation in my studio. Fabrication time.

Planning, Being in the Woods

In June I will be showing my work with Brain David Dennis. This week we met for the second time to plot out our show at ARTSPACE1241. Our exhibition will be a conversation with my two dimensional work ( drawings on Yupo synthetic paper ) and his three dimensional work. The first site drawing was made in our planning meeting. We discussed lighting, installation, and viewer experience.

In the studio : green warp

Started a new series of green drawings this week. Trying to feel out some marks and rhythms. This is just the begining with four drawings on my work table. I'm choosing a set vocabulary. But tomorrow I put them aside to begin work on drawings for my show with Brian Dennis in June.

in the studio : unexpected measurements

My most recent work in progress consists of acrylic ink on Yupo. I love the milky translucency of this synthetic paper. I love the way light glints off the ink. I have been working on a series of small measurement drawings over the past few weeks.

These are two of the drawings I recently made and happened to stack on top of the other. A happy surprise. I'm not really sure if I want to give in to this stacking possibility but I'm working wit the series to see if they could be the focus of my show in June.

small books : measurements

I have been working on several small sketchbooks recently. I have been making single pen dip drawings on each new recto.

I'm using different inks and different pens to draw in each book. These are two of the books I am working on. The orange book is made with a less flexible nib and acrylic ink. The yellow book has walnut ink drawings made with a flexible fine point nib.

The drawings create a linear tale made line by line and page by page.
